A 93 percent year-on-year surge for a single model is the kind of number that makes rival boardrooms sweat. And when the entire lineup posts nearly 24 percent growth in a single month, it is clear something fundamental has shifted in how Indian buyers perceive this brand.
I have been tracking Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s monthly numbers for years now, and March 2026 stands out as one of their strongest dispatches in recent memory. The company pushed 35,145 units out of showrooms last month, up from 28,373 units in March 2026. That is a 23.87 percent YoY jump, and an equally impressive 14.35 percent month-on-month recovery from February 2026. The financial year could not have ended on a better note for Toyota India.
Hyryder Owns The Top Spot With A Massive Surge
The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is no longer just a volume contributor. It is the undisputed anchor of Toyota’s India portfolio right now. With 10,206 units dispatched in March 2026, the compact SUV recorded a staggering 93.08 percent YoY growth. To put that in perspective, Toyota sold roughly half those numbers in March 2026.
I think the hybrid powertrain story is doing the heavy lifting here. Indian buyers in metro cities are increasingly drawn to the strong hybrid option, which delivers genuine fuel savings without the range anxiety of a full EV. The Hyryder sits in a sweet spot — priced competitively against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, but offering a hybrid variant that neither rival currently matches in this segment.
Hycross And Rumion — The MPV Duo Firing On All Cylinders
Innova Hycross held its second-place position comfortably with 7,814 units, growing 9.18 percent YoY. What caught my eye, though, was the 29.35 percent MoM jump. That kind of month-on-month recovery suggests Toyota cleared some supply bottlenecks or ramped up production allocation for the Hycross, because demand for this MPV has never really been the problem.
The real surprise in the lineup is the Rumion. With 3,892 units and a jaw-dropping 117.07 percent YoY growth, this is the model that is quietly building serious momentum. The affordable MPV space in India is heating up, and the Rumion — essentially Toyota’s rebadged take on the Maruti Ertiga platform — is finding buyers who want the Toyota badge, the Toyota service network, and the perceived reliability that comes with it. At over 100 percent growth, I would not be surprised if Toyota starts giving the Rumion more marketing attention in the coming quarters.
Fortuner Stays Unshakable
Some things in the Indian auto market are just constants. The Fortuner is one of them. With 3,795 units in March 2026, the full-size SUV posted 11.88 percent YoY growth and a healthy 23.37 percent MoM increase. In a segment where the Mahindra Scorpio-N and Hyundai Tucson try to chip away at its dominance, the Fortuner continues to hold its ground with the kind of brand equity that money cannot easily buy.
I have always felt the Fortuner sells on aspiration as much as capability. It is the SUV that people in tier-2 and tier-3 cities still look up to, and that emotional pull keeps the order books healthy year after year.

Where The Cracks Are Showing
Not everything is rosy, and I think it is important to be honest about the weak spots. The Taisor posted 2,815 units, down 18.83 percent YoY. The initial excitement around this compact crossover seems to be fading, and with the Maruti Fronx (its platform sibling) competing in the same space, the Taisor is struggling to carve out a distinct identity. Toyota needs to either refresh the feature list or adjust pricing to keep this model relevant.
The Innova Crysta’s decline was expected. At 2,319 units and a 14.08 percent YoY drop, the writing has been on the wall ever since the Hycross launched. Buyers who want a premium Toyota MPV are choosing the newer, more modern Hycross, and the Crysta is slowly transitioning into a fleet and commercial-use vehicle. I would not be surprised if Toyota phases it out within the next couple of years.
Glanza held relatively steady at 3,470 units with just a marginal 0.89 percent YoY dip. In the brutally competitive premium hatchback segment where the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 dominate mindshare, holding ground is itself an achievement. The 8 percent MoM improvement suggests some seasonal recovery as well.
The Niche Players — Hilux, Vellfire, And LC300
These three models operate in very different territory. The Hilux lifestyle pickup, the Vellfire luxury MPV, and the Land Cruiser LC300 flagship are low-volume products that Toyota sells more for brand positioning than for the bottom line. All three saw YoY declines in March, which is not alarming given their niche appeal and high price points. The Camry, however, quietly posted a 7.88 percent YoY uptick with 219 units — modest numbers, but consistent for a segment that barely exists in India anymore.
What This Means For The Rest Of 2026
Looking at the bigger picture, Toyota added 4,411 units over its February 2026 tally, which tells me the company is entering the new financial year with strong momentum. The strategy is clear — hybrids and MPVs are the growth engines, and the Hyryder-Hycross combination is doing exactly what Toyota planned.
I think the real battle in the months ahead will be in the compact SUV space. With Hyundai refreshing the Creta, Kia pushing the Seltos, and Maruti banking on the Grand Vitara, the Hyryder’s 93 percent growth rate will face serious pressure. But if Toyota can maintain even half that trajectory, they are looking at a very strong FY2027 opening.
The Rumion’s breakout performance is the sleeper story here. If it crosses 4,000 units consistently, Toyota will have a genuine three-model volume strategy that most competitors would envy.
If you have been considering a Toyota purchase, March’s numbers tell you that you are not alone. The hybrid Hyryder in particular offers a compelling ownership proposition with real-world fuel efficiency that few rivals match at this price. Head to your nearest Toyota dealership, take a test drive, and see if the numbers make sense for your daily commute. The demand is clearly there — make sure you do not end up on a longer waiting list than necessary.
