No battery capacity, no range figures, no motor output. Just a vague nod toward an electric future wrapped in a body that looks like it belongs on a mountain pass.

Here’s the catch. If this is a fully electric off-road SUV, Nissan would be entering a space where almost nobody has delivered a convincing product yet. The electric off-road segment is wide open. Toyota hasn’t committed an EV 4Runner. Ford’s electric Bronco remains rumor. A production version of this concept could give Nissan a first-mover advantage in a category that barely exists right now.

The real story is the second concept nobody is talking about

Buried in the announcement is a detail most people glossed over. Nissan is bringing 2 concept vehicles to Beijing, not 1. The second appears to be a more conventional crossover, also presumably electric, and also without a name. Both are global debuts. I think the second concept is aimed squarely at the Chinese domestic market, where electric crossovers from BYD and NIO are eating legacy automakers alive. This Beijing concept doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Just days earlier, Nissan confirmed the Xterra is coming back in late 2028 as a series hybrid with around 350 horsepower. It’ll ride on a body-on-frame chassis, get built in the United States, and go directly after the Toyota 4Runner and Ford Bronco. There’s even a luxury Infiniti version planned with 2-row and 3-row options.

When you stack this China concept next to the Xterra revival and the next-generation Pathfinder, a pattern emerges. Nissan is building an entire family of rugged, capable SUVs across multiple markets and powertrains. That’s not a single product bet. That’s a strategic pivot. And it’s the most aggressive move I’ve seen from Nissan in over a decade.
