Hero Just Sold 5.98 Lakh Units — Scooters Up 53% While Rivals Struggle

When everyone was watching TVS and Bajaj fight for scooter supremacy, Hero MotoCorp quietly walked in and posted a 53% scooter growth number that changes the entire conversation. March 2026 just became one of the most important months in Hero’s recent history — and the numbers tell a story that deserves a closer look.

Hero MotoCorp has officially reported total dispatches of 5,98,198 units for March 2026, marking an 8.84% year-on-year growth over 5,49,604 units sold in the same month last year. On a month-on-month basis, that’s a 7.16% jump from February 2026’s 5,58,216 units. Consistent, confident, and very much on track.

Scooters Steal the Show in March

I’ll be honest — when I first saw the scooter figure, I had to double-check it. Hero MotoCorp sold 65,815 scooters in March 2026 alone, which is a massive 53.19% jump year-on-year. That’s not a rounding-error bump. That’s a structural shift in how Indian buyers are choosing Hero.

On a month-on-month basis, scooters grew another 12.58% over February 2026. So this isn’t a one-month blip — it’s momentum building across quarters. For a company traditionally known as the motorcycle king of India, this pivot into scooters is significant and deliberate.

Motorcycles aren’t slowing down either. Hero’s two-wheelers on the motorcycle side recorded 5,32,383 units, up 5.08% YoY and 6.53% MoM. The core strength in the 100–125cc commuter segment, led by favourites like the Splendor series, continues to power volume month after month.

Domestic Market and Exports Both Fire Together

Domestic sales for March 2026 stood at 5,52,505 units — up 8.32% over last year’s 5,10,086 units. That’s a solid base, and it’s backed by strong VAHAN registration data too, with over 5.42 lakh retail registrations recorded during the month. This gives confidence that dispatches are translating into real hands-on-road ownership.

Exports, however, were the overachiever. Hero MotoCorp shipped 45,693 units overseas in March 2026, which is a 15.63% jump over 39,518 units from March 2026. Export volumes also rose 10.78% compared to February 2026. Premium motorcycles and scooters are finding global takers, and Hero’s international push is clearly gaining traction.

Q1 2026 and Full FY26 — A Record Year

Zoom out to the January–March 2026 quarter and the numbers become even more impressive. Hero recorded 17,14,285 units across Q1 2026, representing a 24.17% growth over 13,80,545 units in Q1 2026. Scooters in this quarter grew 53.55% to 1,86,257 units. That’s nearly two lakh scooters in just three months.

The full FY 2026-26 story is just as strong. Hero MotoCorp closed the year with 64,68,834 total units, up 9.66% from 58,99,187 in FY 2024-25. Domestic sales grew 8.10% to 60,66,048 units. Export growth was the real standout — a sharp 40.13% jump to 4,02,786 units across the year, signalling that Hero’s global ambitions are moving from intent to reality.

VIDA EV Hits Its Best Month Ever

Here’s the number that I think will matter most for 2027 and beyond: Hero’s EV arm VIDA recorded 21,434 registrations in March 2026 — its highest monthly figure ever. This is a milestone worth pausing on, especially in a market where EV two-wheeler adoption is patchy and price-sensitive.

VIDA’s monthly record coincides with Hero’s scooter segment exploding. That’s not a coincidence. Hero is expanding its scooter presence in both conventional and electric formats, and buyers in urban India are responding. Whether it’s a Destini for daily commutes or a VIDA for emission-free riding, the portfolio is covering ground effectively.

What’s Driving This Growth?

Three forces are working in Hero’s favour right now. First, rural sentiment has improved considerably, and the 100–125cc commuter segment is the direct beneficiary. Hero owns this space more completely than any other brand. Second, Hero’s expanded scooter lineup is hitting the right price points for urban and semi-urban buyers who want practicality over performance. Third, improving exports and a record EV month show that Hero is no longer just a domestic volume play.

Improved retail infrastructure, stronger after-sales presence in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and a product pipeline that now covers petrol scooters, commuter bikes, and electric two-wheelers — this is a company firing on multiple cylinders heading into FY 2026-27.

If you’ve been on the fence about picking up a Hero scooter or checking out the VIDA EV lineup, March 2026’s sales data suggests you’re far from alone. Head to your nearest Hero dealer, take a test ride, and see for yourself why nearly six lakh Indians chose Hero in just one month. The crowd clearly knows something.
